Eir was born to a merchant family, and the first few years of her life were spent with them, in the bustling capital city, occasionally leaving the safety of the barrier to meet with suppliers or to sell in other settlements. On one of these trips, the family spent the night in an empty house a ways outside one of the settlements, against the warnings of the locals. The whole family was accosted by ghosts that night, but none had it quite as badly as Eir. When they moved on, the girl had changed. Her family chalked it up to the experience, and told her they'd do what they could to help her when they returned home.
When they returned home, though, it quickly became clear that this wasn't just the result of a traumatic event. Over the night, Eir had made a deal, allowing one of the ghosts in the house to bind himself to her. He had promised to keep the more dangerous ghosts at bay, having been a holy mage and a monster hunter in his life, and he did hold to that promise. But now, he had found something he liked in Eir, and had no plans of letting go. He was going to see the world through her eyes, and continue his work through her actions, whether she liked it or not.
Eir's family took her to friends of theirs, retired adventurers and mages with experience dealing with ghosts, to try and rid their daughter of this problem, but they quickly learned that the ghost's life of surrounding himself in holy magic had rendered him immune to it, and he would punish Eir for the attempts to exorcise him.
With that failure, her parents left her in the care of these friends. At first, they would come back to visit regularly, but as time went on, Eir saw them less and less, until she grew to consider the two men who were raising her to be more of her family than her birth parents. These new parents trained her as best they could, in hunting and in magic, and now she's taken up their mantle. She travels the world, helping where she can and hunting down evil where she can, never staying anywhere terribly long, and hoping that one day, she'll find something that will let her finally be free of the ghost haunting her.
